O. S. Tipton, 68, Dies at Baxter
Retired Implement Dealer Dies Today After Long Illness
BAXTER – O. S. Tipton, 68, retired Baxter Implement dealer, died today at 6 a.m. at his home as the result of a malignancy.
He had been in poor health for two years and had been seriously ill since last June.
Long Time Resident
Mr. Tipton, who was born Jan. 14, 1869, had lived at Baxter all of his life with the exception of the few years when he homesteaded in Kansas 10 years ago.
Mr. Tipton was in the implement business in partnership with C. E. Davey at Baxter for a number of years, recently selling out to Otto Sanderman. He entered this business in 1921.
Church Member
Mr. Tipton was an active member of the Congregational church and of the Masonic lodge.
Surviving relatives are his wife, Mrs. Lena Warner Tipton; two daughters, Crete, nurse at Michael Reese hospital in Chicago, and Merna, teacher at Eagle Grove; one son, Gordon, at home; his mother, Mrs. Lavina Tipton, 90, of Baxter; two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Poage of Ames and Mrs. Isabella Poage of South Dakota, and a brother, John of Baxter.
No funeral arrangements have been made.

BAXTER – O. S. Tipton, son of David G. and Lavina Scott Tipton, was born on a farm near Baxter, Iowa, on Jan. 14, 1869, and spent all his life in this vicinity excepting five years spent in Kansas.
He died March 10, at his home in Baxter at the age of 48 years, following a long illness.
After completing his grammer school education he attended Hazel Dell Academy at Newton.
In 1896 he went to Kansas, where he homesteaded a quarter section of land. On returning from Kansas he operated a furniture and hardware business in Baxter for a short time. Later operating a repair shop for fifteen years. For the past several years he engaged in the implement business in partnership with C. E. Davey.
He was a faithful member of the local Congregational church for fifty years, and during most of that time had held some active position in the church. He was also a member of the local masonic order.
He was united in marriage in 1902 to Lena J. Warner, Sheldon, Kans. To this union were born three children, and one son and two daughters.
His death is the first, with the exception of one grandchild, in the direct descendants of Mrs. Lavina Tipton, which number 48, and reach the fifth generation.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lena Warner Tipton; his son, Gordon; and daughters, Merna and Crete; his aged mother, Mrs. Lavina Tipton of Baxter; two sisters, Mrs. Isabella Poage of Manchester, S. Dak., and Mrs. Arthur Poage of Ames, and a brother, John of Baxter.
Funeral services were conducted at the Congregational church on Friday at 2 o’clock by the Rev. B. W. Northrop, pastor of the church.
Music was furnished by Earnest Early of Newton who sang “Oh, Love That Will Not Let Me Go,” and “Crossing The Bar,” accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Robert Geise.
Pallbearers were Ude Bucklin, Calvin Noah, Sr., Will West, Henry Dorr, Perry Secor and Ed Henderson.
Masonic burial services were held at the cemetery and were conducted by Charles B. Hayes of Grinnell. Burial was at Restland Cemetery.
