Mrs. Thornton Dies At 79 Years
Marshalltown Woman Dies at Home of Son, A. M. Thornton, in Newton
Mrs. Mary L. Thornton, 79, died today at 1:25 a.m. at the home of her son, A. M. Thornton, 710 West Ninth Street South, following a three-week illness of pneumonia.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Pursel funeral home in Marshalltown Monday at 200 p.m. and interment will be in Riverside cemetery there.
Mrs. Thornton was born on a farm in Marshall county and spent practically all of her life in and near Marshalltown. Her husband, Frank Thornton, died 34 years ago.
Mrs. Thornton had made her home in Newton with her son at various periods during the past eight years. She had been here since last Thanksgiving.
She was a member of the Christian church and the Eastern Star at Marshalltown.
Surviving relatives are her son, A. M. Thornton of Newton; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild, and one sister, Mrs. Myra Arney.

Mrs. Thornton’s Services Held
Rites held in Marshalltown Monday For Mother of Newton Man
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Thornton, 79, mother of A. M. Thornton of Newton, were conducted from the Pursell funeral home in Marshalltown Monday at 2:00 p.m.
The Rev. P. G. Dennis, pastor of the Christian church, delivered the funeral sermon and the Marshalltown chapter Eastern Star conducted a memorial ceremony.
Interment was in Riverside cemetery, with the following serving as pallbearers: Ralph Leslie, S. A. Dickerson, George Hedstrom, W. H. Arney, R. C. McCague and Ray P. Scott.
Relatives and friends attending from Newton were Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Thornton and children, Lloyd, Evelyn, Duane and Glenn, Mr. and Mrs. Craig Zimmerman, Frances Coy, Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Holdsworth, Mrs. John Nelson, Mrs. Frank Sellman, Mrs. W. S. Largent, Mrs. John Gray, and Mrs. John Brunner. Two granddaughters, Lois and Esther Thornton were unable to attend.
Mrs. Thornton, long time resident of Marshalltown and Marshall county, died Friday morning at the home of her son, A. M. Thornton, in Newton. Death followed a three-week illness of pneumonia.
Surviving relatives are her son, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one sister, Mrs. Myra Arney of Marshalltown.
