W. H. Stuart, 71, Former Kellogg Resident, Dies
KELLOGG – W. H. Stuart, 71, of Grinnell, former Kellogg resident, died Friday at 2:30 a.m. at his home in Grinnell. He had been ill for two years, but pneumonia was given as the immediate cause of his death.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:00 p.m. from the home in Grinnell.
Surviving relatives are his wife, Mrs. Alice Braley Stuart; a foster daughter, Mrs. Kepford Ricker of Los Angeles; a sister, Mrs. Charlotte Gray of Kellogg, and three brothers, Dr. P. E. Stuart of Nashua, and A. H. and C. G. Stuart of Kellogg.
Mr. Stuart was a brother-in-law of Mrs. W. R. Morgan of Newton.

KELLOGG – Funeral services for W. H. Stuart, 71, former local resident, who died at his home in Grinnell Friday morning, May 14, after an illness of over two years duration, were held at the home there Monday afternoon, May 17. Rev. Stuart, pastor of the Presbyterian church was in charge of the rites, assisted by Herman lodge No. 273, A.F. and A.M., with Charles Hayes in charge.
William Hawley Stuart, son of Jasper and Isabel Stuart was born in Versailles, Indiana, July 2, 1865, and came to Iowa with his parents when he was a year old. The family located west of Kellogg and later moved to a farm in Rock Creek township where he grew to manhood. He attended the rural schools and later Hazel Dell Academy at Newton. He taught in the rural schools of the county for several years and was a railroad engineer for 16 years.
He was united in marriage to Miss Alice Braley at Kellogg Jan. 3, 1900 and they resided for a time at Maxwell where he was engaged in the hardware business. He then moved to Kellogg so he could look after his farm interests.
Having no children of their own they took his brother’s infant daughter into their home on the death of the mother and 25 years ago moved to Grinnell to educate this foster daughter.
He had been suffering from an affliction of the heart for over two years and suffered an attack of influenza recently from which pneumonia developed and caused his death.
Surviving relatives include his widow, the foster daughter, Mrs. Kepford Ricker of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Charlotte Gray of Kellogg and three brothers, Dr. P. E. Stuart of Nashua and A. H. and C. G. Stuart of Kellogg.
The remains were cremated and the ashes placed in a grave on the Braley lot in Our Silent City.
Music for the rite included two solos, “Abide With Me” and “Jesus Lover of My Soul,” sung by Richard Kunsel.
The following served as pallbearers: George Clifton, Ross Coutts, William Gardener, William Kearney, Cecil Meyers and William Currough.
