O. B. Shaver, 88, Dies here Today
Father of Mrs. Grant Smith Of This City; From Old Age
O. B. Shaver, 88, died this morning at 6:30 at the home of his daughters, Mrs. Grant Smith, of this city. Mr. Shaver had been ill for four months from a general break down due to complications of old age.
Otis Ballard Shaver was born on Aug. 30, 1848, near Fairfield, O. He came from Ohio with his parents when a boy, and settled near Clarinda, Ia. Fifty-six years of his life were spent on the farm. In 1927 he came to Newton to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. Smith.
He was married in Lincoln, Ill., in 1871 to Miss Sophie Spangler. Six children were born to this union, of whom four survive: Charles Shaver and Fred Shaver of Riceville, Ia., Mrs. Grace Rogers of Lakefield, Minn., and Mrs. Grant Smith of Newton. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His wife died in 1907, and two children, Alberta Shaver McAltin and John Shaver, also preceded him in death.
Mr. Shaver was one of eight children, of whom three are now living: his sisters, Mrs. Temple Turlay of Chanute, Kan., Mrs. Martha Lucas and Miss Flo Taylor of Chicago.
Mr. Shaver was a member of the Methodist church, the Newton Daily News Three Quarter Century club, and the I.O.O.F. lodge.
On account of the fact that the body will be taken to Guss, Ia., for burial brief services will be held at the Grant Smith home Wednesday evening at 7 o’clock. Dr. L. B. Logan will be in charge.

Hold Brief Rites For O. B. Shaver
Funeral Party Leaves This Morning for Guss, Ia., For Burial
Brief funeral services for O. B. Shaver, 88, were held Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Grant Smith, 214 East Second Street North. Dr. Leslie B. Logan of the Methodist Episcopal church was in charge.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Logan, who sang, “Lead Kindly Light” and “Going Down the Valley.”
The funeral party left early this morning for Guss, Ia., where burial was to be made today.
Mr. Shaver, member of The Daily News’ Three Quarter Century club, died Tuesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Smith, from complications attributed to old age. He had made his home here since 1927.
Surviving relatives are two daughters, Mrs. Smith of Newton and Mrs. Grace Rogers of Lakefield, Minn.; two sons, Charles Shaver and Fred Shaver of Riceville, Ia.; nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and three sisters, Mrs. Temple Turley of Chanute, Kan., Mrs. Martha Lucas and Miss Flo Taylor of Chicago.
