Heart Attack Fatal To Man
Herman Schnathorst, 77, Dies Late Thursday Afternoon At Home
Herman Schnathorst, 77, long time resident of Jasper county, died unexpectedly Thursday afternoon at his home as the result of a heart attack, suffered while working in his garden.
Mr. Schnathorst complained of not feeling well when he returned indoors from the garden. He died before medical aid reached him.
A daughter, Mrs. Helen Snyder, and her two children and Mr. Schnathorst’s sister-in-law, Mrs. Minnie Schnathorst of Newton, who had been visiting in the Snyder home, arrived from Waterloo Thursday just a short time before his death.
Funeral Rites
Funeral services will be conducted from the Murdoch funeral home Sunday at 1:30 p.m., and interment will be in the Newton Union cemetery.
Mr. Schnathorst was born at Sheboygan, Wis., June 16, 1860, the son of William and Charlotta Schnathorst, and came with his parents to Jasper county, Ia., when he was eight years old.
The family located nine miles north of Newton, where Mr. Schnathorst grew to manhood.
He was united in marriage to Anna Stork at Newton, Feb. 20, 1901, and the couple lived on the home place for two years. They came to Newton 34 years ago and have lived at the present home at 701 South Fifth Avenue East.
An old-time fiddler, Mr. Schnathorst entertained The Daily News Three Quarter Century club picnic in June. He had been a member of the club since his seventy-fifth birthday anniversary two years ago.
He was also a member of the Zoar Reformed church, north of Newton.
Surviving Relatives
Immediate survivors are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Elsie Short at home and Mrs. Snyder of Waterloo; a son, Gilbert, of Des Moines, and six grandchildren, Garnet and Norman Short, Ralph and Robert Snyder, and Gloria and Janet May Schnathorst.
Also surviving are three brothers, William Schnathorst of Frazee, Minn., Henry Schnathorst of Moorhead, Minn., and Carl Schnathorst of Huron, S.D., and two sisters, Mrs. Amelia Korte of Melbourne, and Mrs. Bertha Stork of Newton.

Conduct Rites For Newton Man
Funeral Services Held At Local Funeral Home; Dr. Blancke In Charge
Funeral services for Herman Schnathorst, 77, long-time resident of Jasper county, were conducted from the Murdoch funeral home Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Dr. W. H. Blancke, pastor emeritus of the First Lutheran church, delivered the funeral sermon, speaking in both English and German, the native language of Mr. Schnathorst’s parents.
Richard Toedt sang two old hymns, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “The Way of the Cross Leads Home.” Mrs. R. L. Jackson played the organ accompaniment.
Interment was in the Newton Union cemetery, with the following serving as pall bearers: John Lehmann, Clarence Petermeier, John Petermeier, Wilbur Schnathorst, Ed Schnathorst and Will Damman.
Those attending the rites from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Ben Alleman, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gfeller and Mr. and Mrs. John Lehmann of Slater; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Snyder of Reinbeck; Miss Rena Schnathorst of Moorhead, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Everett Snyder and family of Waterloo; Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Schnathorst and family of Des Moines, and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Darr of Polk City.
