George Rater of Des Moines Dies; Burial in Monroe
Funeral services for George A. Rater, 82, of Des Moines, former Jasper county resident, were conducted from the Lilly funeral home in Des Moines Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., by the Rev. Mr. Humphrey. Burial was in the Monroe cemetery, with a short graveside rite given by the Monroe I.O.O.F. lodge.
Mr. Rater died Monday, Nov. 22, at 10:00 a.m. at his home in Des Moines, 1325 Fremont Street, at the age of 82 years, 10 months and 18 days.
He was born Jan 4, 1855, the son of Daniel and Sarah Rater, and was married to Flora McCroskey Dec. 31, 1879, six daughters, were born to this union, two of whom died in infancy.
For many years, Mr. Rater and his family resided in Jasper county. He was a member of the Reasnor M. E. church until he moved to Redfield, and was a charter member of the Monroe I.O.O.F. lodge and the W.O.W. lodge of Reasnor.
Surviving relatives include his wife; four daughters, Maude Schepplar of Sanitarium, Calif.; Florence Efnor of Oskaloosa, Ia.; Pearl Cooper and Gladys Van Deventer of Des Moines; thirteen grandchildren and four great grandsons; two brothers, Will Rater of Adair, and Asbury Rater of Redfield; four sisters, Mrs. Charles Mortimore of Adair, Ia., Mrs. J. H. Farris of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Lulu Den Hoet of Fergus Falls, Minn., and Mrs. Florence Lufkin of Reasnor, Ia.
