Delbert Z. Hammer, 91, of Newton died Wednesday, July 7, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Syd McCrorey of Community Heights Alliance Church in Newton officiating. Burial will be at Center Friends Church Cemetery.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home where the family will be available from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County or to Center Friends Church and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Dyer L. and Ella (Anderson) Hammer, he was born June 17, 1913, in rural Kellogg, Rock Creek. He attended Laurel High School in Laurel and lived in Kellogg until moving northeast of Newton in 1950.

On Dec. 14, 1935, he married Dorothy J. McMurray in Laurel. He was a farmer all his life and started the Amboy Trail Ranch in rural Newton. He was a member of Center Friends Church.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dyer C. and Barbara Hammer of Hendersonville, N.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Roger Beaver of Carlisle; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a sister, Marjorie Hammer; a brother, Howard Hammer; a grandson; and a nephew. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Tuesday, July 8, 2004
