Jack R. Grimes, 90, of Newton died Tuesday, July 6, at his home in Newton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton with the Rev. Ernest Braida officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in rural Newton.

A prayer service will be held today at 7 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Friends may call from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home where the family will be available from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. with a coffee time in the social room of the funeral home. Memorials will be accepted to the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association and may be left at the funeral home or at the church the day of the service.

The son of Hillis and Verna (Adkinson) Grimes, he was born March 1, 1914, in Albia. On Jan. 29, 1940, he married Kathryn Crane in Albia. He grew up in Albia and moved to Newton in 1950. He was a machinist for the Maytag Company for 26 years and retired in 1976. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He had a passion for golf and would play 18 holes of golf every day of the week when possible.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Reggie and Sherry Grimes of Johnston; a daughter, Georgene Breckenridge of Alverado, Texas; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four step-grandchildren; and two sisters, Hazel Hall of Dubuque and Wilma Hess of Fayetteville, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Ronnie and Steve Grimes; a brother, Richard Grimes; and two sisters, Zella Stone and Gerrie Wakeland. ~ Newton (IA) Daily News, Tuesday, July 8, 2004
