Pioneer Dies Near Gilman
John Newcomer Came to Jasper County in 1867
NEWBURG – Funeral services were to be held here today for John Newcomer, 90-year old Jasper county pioneer who died Thursday night near Gilman at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. M. Burroughs.
Mr. Newcomer came to Jasper county in 1867, riding in a covered wagon train.
He served 20 years as treasurer of the Hickory Grove school district. He was township assessor for seven years and township trustee for eight years.
