Samuel Miles, Former Resident Dies in Wisconsin
Samuel R. Miles, 77, former Newton resident, died Friday, Oct. 15, at his home near Sturgeon Bay, Wis. He was a brother of E. J. Miles of Newton.
Mr. Miles, a nationally known hardware man, was president of the National Retail Hardware association in 1907-08. He was founder of the Iowa Hardware association in 1900, and shortly after, of the Iowa Hardware Mutual Insurance company.
Born in Montezuma, Ia., he became apprenticed to the hardware business at the age of 16. He attended business college at Union, Ia., and was married there to Nellie Hobbs in 1882.
After some time in Newton, he opened up his own business in Oskaloosa and later in Mason City. He was with the E. C. Atkins company of Indianapolis from 1915 to 1920, and from then until he retired in 1932, was with the National Hardware association.
Mr. Miles spent the last years of his life on his farm near Sturgeon Bay, Wis.
Surviving relatives include his wife and a son, John. A daughter, Vera, died this spring.
