F. W. Meyer, 80, Dies At Baxter
Retired Stock Man Dies Thursday at His Home After Long Illness
BAXTER – Frederick W. Meyer, 80, prominent retired stock man, died Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at his home in Baxter, following a long illness from a bronchial ailment. He had been in failing health throughout the summer and had been seriously ill six weeks before his death.
Brief funeral rites will be held Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Boyd funeral home, followed by final services at 2:00 o’clock at the Zoar Reformed church east of Baxter.
Mr. Meyer was born in Germany Feb. 9, 1857, the son of Fred and Mary (Stock) Meyer, and had lived in Jasper county since coming here from Germany as a youth.
He farmed for a number of years six miles east of Baxter, moving from there to a home in Baxter 12 years ago. He was widely known as a breeder of fine livestock.
He was united in marriage to Lizzie Hattebuhr, March 5, 1890, and to this union four children were born. A daughter, Priscilla, and a son, Everett, preceded him in death.
Mr. Meyer was also preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.
Surviving relatives include his wife; two sons, Ralph and Edward Meyer of Baxter; two sisters, Mrs. Charles Gilgen of State Center and Mrs. Elmer Goodhue of Carlisle; a brother, Adolph Meyer of New Virginia, Ia., and three grandchildren, Marvin Meyer and Ramona Meyer of Baxter, and Myron Meyer of Newton.

BAXTER – Brief funeral services were conducted at one o’clock from the Boyd funeral home and final services at 2:00 o’clock at the Zoar Reformed church, east of Baxter for Frederick W. Meyer on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 6.
The services were in charge of Rev. B. W. Northrop, pastor of the Congregational church in Baxter.
Music for the rites at the funeral home was furnished by Mrs. C. F. Weeks and Mrs. A. J. Dodd. At the church a quartet composed of Herman Leisble, Will Klaumberg, Herman Klaumberg, and Roy Rhuelman, sang with Mrs. Ed Herzog as the accompanist. They sang “End of the Way” and “When My Soul Reaches Heaven.”
Interment was made in the church cemetery, with Mr. Meyer’s nephews, Fred Schnathorst, Freddie Meyer, Will Gilgen, Lawrence Tribby, Wilbur Goodhue and John Hawthorne, serving as pallbearers.
Frederick W. Meyer was born in Germany, February 9, 1857 and came to this country with his parents at the age of seven years. His parents settled in Jasper county, Ia., and here he grew to manhood and spent the remainder of his life.
He was united in marriage with Lizzie Hattebuhr March 5, 1896 and the couple made their home on a farm northeast of Baxter. They continued to reside there until 12 years ago, when they moved to Baxter, where they were living at the time of Mr. Meyer’s death, Dec. 2, at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 23 days.
Mr. and Mrs. Meyer became the parents of three sons and one daughter. One of these sons, Everett and the daughter, Estella, preceded their father in death. Two sons, Edward and Ralph, both of Baxter, together with the wife survive.
Mr. Meyer is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Anna Gilgen of State Center, Ia., and Mrs. Lena Goodhue of Carlisle, Ia., one brother, Adolph Meyer, of New Virginia, Ia., and three grandchildren.
Mr. Meyer was a man of such tireless industry that even after he had supposedly retired from active labor on the farm he still found delight in work, even during the last years of his life when he had reached an age most men find enjoyment in leisure and inactivity.
Those attending the rites from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Milburn and daughters, Fern and Goldie of Guckeen, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Will Tramel of Morristown, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Will Kracht and son, Harold, of Kasson, Minn., and Pete Behn of Omaha, Nebr.
