Mrs. Mendenhall Dies At 83 Years
Long-time Resident of Jasper County Dies Monday Night
Mrs. Harriet E. Mendenhall, 83, long-time resident of Jasper county, died Monday night at 310 West Second Street North. Death was attributed to complications, resulting from her advanced age.
Mrs. Mendenhall was brought to Newton Saturday, Oct. 20, from Rosehill, Ia., where she had been ill.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the Murdoch funeral home, with Dr. W. H. Blancke, pastor emeritus of the First Evangelical Lutheran church in charge. Interment will be in the Newton Union cemetery.
Born in 1854
Mrs. Mendenhall was born in Camden, Preble county, O., Aug. 4, 1854, the daughter of Clayton and Abigail Taylor, and was the last surviving member of a family of 11 children.
She came to Henry county, Ia., in 1847, and to Jasper county in 1869, where she spent the remainder of her life.
She was united in marriage to Ezekiel Mendenhall at Oskaloosa in 1873, and to this union five children were born, four of whom survive.
Friends Church
Mrs. Mendenhall was a member of the Friends church.
Surviving relatives include a son, Clayton Mendenhall of Kellogg and three daughters, Mrs. Inez Failor of Newton, and Mrs. Nellie Cline and Mrs. Hazel Lisk of Rosehill.
Mrs. Mendenhall was preceded in death by her husband and by a son, Clyde, who died 20 years ago.

Hold Rites For Local Woman
Mendenhall Funeral Services Conducted Thursday Afternoon by Dr. Blancke
Funeral services for Mrs. Harriet E. Mendenhall, 83, early Jasper county resident, were conducted from the Murdoch funeral home Thursday at 2:00 p.m. by Dr. W. H. Blancke, pastor emeritus of the Evangelical Lutheran church. Interment was in Newton Union cemetery.
Rev. W. Clark Williams sang, “Shall We Gather at the River,” and “City Foursquare,” accompanied at the organ by Lois Hundling.
Honorary pallbearers were three granddaughters, Mrs. Elsie Smith, Mrs. Lucile Wert and Mrs. Helen Colbert.
Active pallbearers included Lester Mendenhall, Woodrow Failor, Clyde Lisk, Clarence Cline, Kenneth Cline and Shelbert Cline, all grandsons.
The flowers were arranged by Mrs. Loren Failor and Mrs. Don Failor.
Died Monday
Mrs. Mendenhall died Monday night in Newton, following a several weeks illness from complications, arising from old age. She was taken ill while visiting a daughter at Rosehill, Ia., and was brought back to Newton Oct. 30.
A native of Camden, O., Mrs. Mendenhall was the last survivor of the six children of Clayton and Abigail Taylor. She came to Iowa in 1867, and to Jasper in 1869, where she spent the remainder of her life.
She was married to Ezekiel Mendenhall at Oskaloosa in 1873. They lived for a year at Lynnville and then moved to a farm between Kellogg and Newton, where they resided for a number of years.
Here Since 1916
About 1916, they came to Newton, where Mr. Mendenhall’s death occurred July 6, 1924. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Clyde, who died 20 years ago, by a grandchild and by two great grandchildren.
Mrs. Mendenhall was a member of the Friends church.
Surviving relatives include a son, Clayton Mendenhall of Kellogg; three daughters, Mrs. Inez Failor of Newton and Mrs. Nellie Cline and Mrs. Hazel Lisk of Rosehill; 16 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
