Mrs. N. J. Fugard Dies At 77 years
Death Comes to Life-Long Jasper County Resident Today
Mrs. Noble J. Fugard, 77, life-long resident of Jasper county and descendent of early pioneers, died today at 6:00 a.m. at the Skiff Memorial hospital.
Mrs. Fugard had been bedfast since she entered the hospital Feb. 11, but had been in poor health for some time. Death was due to Brights’ disease.
Funeral Services
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the Morgan funeral home with the Rev. L. R. Bobbitt of the First Baptist church in charge. Interment will be in the Adamson Grove cemetery.
Mary Jane Bicknell, daughter of John W. and Rebekah (Nichols) Bicknell, was born June 25, 1859, on a farm south of Murphy, in Jasper county. She was one of a family of five children.
Early Pioneers
Her father was a native of North Carolina and her mother was the daughter of John and Mary Nichols, who were among the earliest settlers in Jasper county.
Mary Jane lived her girlhood on a farm southeast of town and in Newton, where her father operated a livery stable, south of the present site of the Baptist church.
She was united in marriage to Charles Edwards May 22, 1882, and to this union one child, Etta May was born.
Married in 1893
Later she was married to Noble J. Fugard on Aug. 17, 1893, and the couple lived on farms southeast of Newton until moving to Newton in 1904.
They adopted a daughter, Daisy, who is now Mrs. George Brown of Newton.
Mr. Fugard’s death occurred Feb. 28, 1919, and at that time he was janitor of the Lincoln school.
Telephone Exchange
Mrs. Fugard had operated the Murphy Telephone Exchange from 1911, until three years ago. Since that time, her daughter, Mrs. Guy A. Hammer has lived with her and continued with the operation of the exchange.
Mrs. Fugard was a member of the Baptist church.
Surviving relatives include her daughter, Mrs. Hammer; the adopted daughter, Mrs. Brown; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wesley C. Bicknell of Newton, Kan., and Elias M. Bicknell in Nebraska, and a half-brother, Frank Bicknell in California.

Conduct Services For Mrs. Fugard
Rites Held in Newton Thursday Morning; Burial in Adamson Grove
Funeral services for Mrs. Noble J. Fugard, 77, life-long resident of Jasper county, were conducted from the Morgan funeral home Thursday at 9:30 a.m. by Rev. L. R. Bobbitt of the First Baptist church.
A quartet, composed of Mrs. Ray Livingston, Mrs. Fred Welle, Emmet Van Dalen and James Van Baren, sang, “Does Jesus Care?” and “Good Night and Good Morning.” Mrs. David Welle played the accompaniment.
Interment was in the Adamson Grove cemetery, with the following serving as pallbearers; Victor Reynolds, Charles Davis, Ney Davis, Wildman Woods, Herman Welle and C. Van Gilst. Mrs. Virgil Garlock and Irene Watson were in charge of the flowers.
Mrs. Fugard died Tuesday morning at the Skiff Memorial hospital following a long illness of Bright’s Disease.
Surviving relatives are a daughter, Mrs. Guy Hammer of Newton; an adopted daughter, Mrs. George Brown of Newton; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wesley C. Bicknell of Newton, Kan., and Elias M. Bicknell of Nebraska and a half-brother, Frank Bicknell in California.
