Melvin Fales, 29, Dies in Iowa City
Monroe Farmer Dies Early This Afternoon; Body to Be Brought to Newton
Melvin Fales, 29, farmer of near Monroe, died early this afternoon at the University hospital in Iowa City, where he had been a patient for several weeks.
Mr. Fales entered the hospital for a nasal operation and had contracted scarlet fever over a week ago.
The body was to be brought from Iowa City to the Morgan funeral home in Newton later this afternoon.
Mr. Fales, the son of Mrs. George W. Chapman of Newton, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Gladys Valentine Fales, and four children. Two children preceded him in death.

Fales Rites To Be Held Wednesday
Private funeral services for Melvin Fales, 29, who died of scarlet fever Monday at the University hospital in Iowa City, will be conducted from the Morgan funeral home Wednesday at 2 p.m. by Dr. Leslie B. Logan. Interment will be in the Palo Alto cemetery.

Fales Funeral Services Held
Private Rites Held For Jasper County Farmer, Victim of Scarlet Fever
Private funeral services for Melvin Fales, 29, who died of scarlet fever and complications at Iowa City Monday, were conducted from the Morgan funeral home Wednesday at 2 p.m. by Dr. Leslie B. Logan, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church.
Mrs. Logan and Mrs. Fred Reeve furnished the music, singing “The Old Rugged Cross” and “City Foursquare.”
Pallbearers
Interment was in the Palo Alto cemetery, with the following serving as pallbearers: Joe Lynn, Frank Wilcox, Fred Wilcox, Karl Gibford, Merle Badgley and Walter Wheatcraft.
Mr. Fales submitted to a nasal operation at the University hospital at Iowa City March 24, and contracted scarlet fever March 26. He became seriously ill March 31, and was unconscious several days before his death.
Mr. Fales, son of John and Mary (Anderson) Fales, was born at Newton June 27, 1897, and grew to manhood here. His father died 29 years ago.
Marriage
He was united in marriage to Gladys Valentine Feb. 8, 1919, and to this union six children were born, two of whom preceded him in death.
At the time of his death, he lived on a farm southwest of Monroe.
Surviving relatives include his wife; four sons, Doyle, 15, Wayne, 13, John, 10, and Gerald, 9; his mother, Mrs. George W. Chapman of Newton; a brother, P. E. Fales of Sully; two half-brothers, Sidney Fales of Washington state and Avery Fales of Roswell, N. Mex., and two half-sisters, Mrs. Cora Gibford of Hatton, Wash., and Mrs. Dell Metz of Seattle, Wash.
