Thomas Dowling Dies at 67 Years
Life-Long Resident of Newton Dies Following Long Illness
Thomas Dowling, 67, life-long resident of Newton, died today at 10:00 a.m., at his home, 427 South Second Avenue West, following a year’s illness.
Mr. Dowling, born and raised in Newton, was a retired stationery engineer and was employed at the One Minute company for a number of years.
His wife, Mrs. Julia Dowling, and several nieces and nephews survive.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:00 a.m. at the Catholic church.

Hold Mass For Thomas Dowling
Final Rites Held Monday Morning at Sacred Heart Church In Newton
Low Requiem mass for Thomas Dowling, 67, life-long resident of Jasper county, was conducted from the Sacred Heart church Monday at 10:00 a.m. by the Rev. Father T. J. McCann of Newton, assisted by the Rev. Father T. C. Donahue of Grinnell.
Music was furnished by a choir composed of Frances Magyar, Eleanor Pink, Mary Dickinson, Katherine Phillips, George Magyar, Rolland Rosenberger, Betty Brady, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Shenton, and Simon Zwifelhofer. Mary Zwifelhofer was the assompanist.
The choir sang, “Lord of Mercy and Compassion” and “Veni Jesu Amor Mi,” a sextette sang, “Mary Unto Thee I Call,” and Mr. Zwifelhofer presented a solo, “Petition.”
Pall Bearers
Interment was in the Sacred Heart cemetery, with the following serving as pall bearers: Frank Kelly, Paul Kelly, James Murphy, George Magyar, Phil Multhauf, and Gene Donahue.
Mr. Dowling died Saturday morning at his home, 427 South Second Avenue West, following a year’s illness.
He was born on a farm west of Newton March 20, 1870, the son of Edward and Elizabeth Dowling. When he was two years old, his father died and he and his mother moved to Newton.
Marriage
He was married to Julia Flanagan of Sully 35 years ago and they lived in a residence near the Maytag factory, until moving to their present home 12 years ago.
A stationary engineer, Mr. Dowling was employed at the City Light plant and later at the One Minute Washer company. He retired in 1925, because of an injury in an accident.
Mr. Dowling’s only sister, Mrs. Mary Hotchkin of Grinnell, died a year ago.
He was a member of Sacred Heart church and the Newton Knights of Columbus lodge.
His wife and several nieces and nephews survive.
