Grinnell Man Drowns in Lake
Police Hold Companion, Another Flees Scene; Boys Call for Help
GRINNELL, IA – Eddie Ditzler, 35-year-old laborer, drowned early Thursday afternoon while swimming in Arbor Lake, a small lake on the edge of the city limits owned by the Grinnell Soft Water Co., but not open for public use.
A number of small boys playing near the water’s edge saw the man’s difficulties and summoned aid, but help was not available immediately and it was several hours before the body was recovered.
An unidentified companion, suffering from intoxication at the time of the drowning, is being held by local police who Thursday afternoon asked Marshalltown police to be on the lookout for another man seen with the drowned man. The two companions were reported to have ran from the scene of the accident.
Ditzler is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Ditzler of Grinnell, and by two brothers, John Ditzler of Grinnell and George Ditzler of Marshalltown.
