Grinnell Senior Dies of Injuries
GRINNELL, IA. – Mark Conkling, one of the victims of an automobile accident last Wednesday night on highway No. 6 at the Sugar Creek corner west of Grinnell, passed away Monday evening in a Grinnell hospital.
At first considered less seriously injured than his companion, Bob Hamilton of Grinnell, who suffered a fractured skull, Conkling began to fail rapidly on Friday, and a delicate brain operation on Saturday and blood transfusions on Monday proved unavailing. Hamilton, appears on the road to a satisfactory recovery. Rickey Boller of Des Moines, Pioneer football star and the third member of the group which started for Des Moines Wednesday night in Hamilton’s car, received only minor injuries.
Conkling was a senior student at Grinnell College at the time of the accident. He had graduated from Roosevelt high school in Des Moines, where he participated in numerous activities.
He is survived by his father, Mark Conkling, Sr., of Des Moines, manager of the Glasgow Tailors, and mother and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held in Des Moines.
