Mrs. Cameron Dies In Utah
Prominent Salt Lake City Woman was Native of Newton
Mrs. Laura Whittaker Cameron, 65, prominent Salt Lake City club woman and former resident of Newton, died Saturday evening, May 29, at her home in the Hotel Utah of a long ailment.
Her sister, Mrs. Charles Guthrie of Newton, went by plane to her bedside Sunday, May 23, and helped care for her a week previous to her death.
Born in Newton Sept. 19, 1871, she was a daughter of John J. and Elizabeth Whitaker, pioneers of Iowa. She was married in Newton to Frank N. Cameron, who was a native of Colorado, and they went west about 40 years ago, residing first in Castlegate, Utah.
After a short residence in Dawson, N.M., they returned to Castlegate for five years before establishing a permanent residence in Salt Lake City. Mr. Cameron was vice president and general manager of the Utah Fuel company and later president of the Liberty Fuel company. He died in 1929.
Mrs. Cameron held membership in the Alta club, the Country club, and the Order of Eastern Star and was associated with charity work for the blind in Salt Lake City. She was also a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Walker Kennedy, two grandchildren and a niece, Mary Jane Weber, all of Salt Lake City; a brother, John F. Whittaker and two sisters, Mrs. Guthrie and Mrs. Karl Parks, all of Newton.
