Mark E. Schakel, 80, of Newton died Thursday, Sept. 16, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call from noon unti 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Jasper County Historical Museum or to the First United Methodist Church.

The son of Peter and Bessie (Grandia) Schakel, he was born June 29, 1924, in Pella. He graduated from Pella High School in 1942 and from Iowa State University in 1947. On June 29, 1945, he married Phyllis Ver Steeg in Pella. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Schakel taught agriculture at the Newton Senior High School and worked as a field man for Farm Bureau before joining the Jasper County Savings Bank. He worked for the bank for 36 years and retired as executive vice president in 1989.

Mr. Schakel was a member of First United Methodist Church, Jasper County Farm Bureau and American Legion Post 111. He lived in Pella from 1924 to 1942, in Des Moines from 1942 to 1945, in Ames from 1945 to 1947 and was a resident of Newton since 1947.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Mark E. Schakel II of Santa Rosa, Calif.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda Schakel of Washington, D.C., Julie and Dennis Earhart of West Des Moines and Kristen S. and Olin Webb of Irving, Texas; one grandchild; and two sisters, Nadine Fryman of Palm Springs, Calif., and Donna Campbell of Ventura, Calif.
