Lifelong Resident Here
The following obituary was read by the Rev. Mr. Bosma:
Mrs. Frieda Etje Breer was born in Independence township, Jasper county, Iowa, on the 1st day of September, 1894.
She was the first child of a family of nine born to Henry Sinkler and wife, Louisa Boeke-Sinkler. One sister, Kathrene, Mrs. Adolph Breer, preceded her in death. The remaining sisters and brothers are Joseph Sinkler of Nevada, Ia.; Mary (Mrs. Albert Krampe), and Carl Sinkler of Baxter; Victoria (Mrs. Jerome Yetley) of Ottumwa; Dora (Mrs. Gene Hamilton) of Fairfield; Dr. Benjamin Sinkler of New Sharon, and Lilly (Mrs. Louis Gerke) of Cambridge.
The deceased grew up in this vicinity, and together with her husband and family lived on neighboring farms until her sudden demise Monday, October 26th having reached the age of 48 years, 1 month and 25 days.
In her girlhood years she attended public and also church schools, entering upon communicant membership in Bethany Reformed church with a class of 11 in the spring of 1909.
On January 5th, 1914, she married Walter Breer, and together they farmed various places in the neighborhood, in late years residing a mile and a half north of Baxter. F Three children were born into their home: Calvin Breer, Ester (Mrs. Elmer Weuve) and LeRoy Breer, now stationed at Alameda, Calif., and present for the memorial services today.
Stricken While Attending Funeral
Mrs. Breer had not been in good health for several years, yet none realized the seriousness of her condition. While attending a funeral at Melbourne she became suddenly ill. A doctor, nurse and ambulance were summoned, but even before she reached the Deaconess hospital, at about a quarter to five on Monday afternoon, she breathed her last. Thus her days were cut off in the midst of the span of years that are allotted to man, even as the Psalmist says, “For it is soon cut off and we fly away.”
The entire community was shocked to hear of her unexpected and sudden passing. Forcefully all are reminded that life is but a fleeting breath, spent ere we are aware as a tale that is told. We plan for today and tomorrow, yet none knows whether he shall see the morrow. We have only the present fleeting moment, no more. Precious moment indeed to live and to live the very best. Full well should we continually pray with the Psalmist, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
The deceased was a careful, loving wife and mother. For her family she lived, loved and toiled, not along easy road, but with a good share of the hardships and perplexities of life to face from day to day. In the family circle, she was the maternal guiding soul, whose presence will now be missed more than words can express.
The entire community sympathizes with the bereaved family, especially also our congregation of which she was a member since infancy, and our ladies Aid in which she was always active. The many relatives and friends present today, express their humble respect to, as also sorrowful leave of a companion and friend who was very dear to them. We realize what a crushing blow this is to husband and family who are overwhelmed with grief and it is our privilege to stand by with word and deed in their hour of distress.
