Born Near Ira
Caroline Delphene Price, daughter of Martha Tramel and William O. Price, was born October 2nd, 1862, at the home of her grandfather, William A. B. Tramel one month after her father was mustered into the Union army during the Civil War. The home was just a short distance from what is now the Union Chapel church.
In September 1875, she moved with her parents to Riverside, California, where they resided nearly five years. On their return to Iowa they purchased what was known as the William Harter farm in the Sand Hill neighborhood, northeast of Colfax, where she grew to womanhood.
She attended the public schools of Jasper County, graduating from the Hazel Dell academy at Newton, later attending the University of Iowa, where she studied medicine, receiving an M.D. degree with the class of 1894. She practiced in Newton, Mingo and Des Moines in the following years, moving to Oregon in 1905.
On July 21st, 1906, she was united in marriage to John Jackson, of Redmond, Oregon. They made their home in Oregon and Tacoma, Washington with the exception of a few years spent in Georgia, until his death in 1938.
The following year she returned to Jasper County, settling at Baxter, where she resided until her death on October 28th, 1942, at the age of 80 years and 26 days, following a lingering illness of a year. She is survived by three brothers, Walter Price, of Outlook, Washington, and William I. and Fredrick O. Price, of Baxter. A brother, Herman, preceded her in death in March 1931.
Interested In Negro Welfare
Mrs. Jackson was a woman greatly interested in the welfare of the colored race. During her residence in Georgia she become aware of the splendid work being done by the Piney Woods school and has contributed substantially to its support throughout the years.
She was a member of the Congregational church and attended when her health permitted. She was a true friend to all, a kind neighbor and loving sister, and will be greatly missed in her home community.
