Death of an Old Soldier

Across the wires came the message Friday that Mr. William Strawn had passed away and the body would be brought Friday at 4 p. m. to its old home for interment.

Mr. Strawn was an aged veteran of the great rebellion, and until about two years ago, had made his home in Prairie City for a long time, when the flattering words of a much younger man induced him to trade his little home here for a farm in the wilds of southwestern Missouri. Feeble in body and past seventy years of age, he, with his aged wife, wended their way to that uncultivated region only to find they could not stay; and with barely enough to get them back they arrived here; but the home was gone.

Since then Mr. Strawn has gradually faded away until Thursday, August 26th, the weary spirit took its flight. The funeral cortege was met at the Waveland Cemetery by members of the G. A. R. and old neighbors to pay respect to their comrade and friend.

Rev. Stitts of the Baptist Church in Colfax conducted the burial service at the grave. The aged wife and one daughter mourn the loss of this faithful husband and father. To these we tender our deepest sympathy. ~ The Newton (IA) Record Friday, September 3, 1897
