Obituary ­ Mary Shepherd

Miss Mary F. Shepherd was born Nov. 11, 1817, in Washington County, Indiana. She came to Iowa and was married to Nelson Rowe at Davenport in 1847. They afterwards removed to Iowa City; then in April 1867, to Prairie City, where Mr. Rowe died April 17, 1872. Since that time she has made her home with her brother, Daniel Shepherd, until his death last year; after that she remained in the home of her niece, Mrs. Bussell, where she died March 29, 1897. There were present at the funeral a few of the relatives remaining, including Mrs. Albert Millsap and Mrs. Shepherd from Des Moines and Miss Mate Dixon from Colfax. Despite the rainy afternoon and bad roads a goodly number from town were present. A short, but appropriate service, was conducted by Rev. J. J. Mitchell, assisted in part by the choir of the Congregational Church. Her remains were laid beside those of her brother in the new cemetery. The only surviving member of the family is a brother living in the state of Washington, who could not be present. ~ The Newton Record Friday, April 2, 1897
