Vogel D. Main Died Thursday Of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Funeral Services Held Sunday Afternoon From Methodist Church.
V. D. Main, 67, well-known farmer of Poweshiek township was found dead in his two car garage about, four o'clock Thursday afternoon by his wife. He had left the house shortly after the noon meal.
Death was caused, according to coroner Ralph Toland from over-exertion and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Mr. Main had gone to the garage shortly after dinner to work on a pick-up truck and was running the motor to charge the battery. Shortly after 4 p. m. Mrs. Main became worried about him and went to the garage. She found him sitting on the bumper of the car as though he had dozed off. She felt of his pulse and was afraid he was gone, but lifted him off the bumper and laid him on the floor hoping that position might help and then called a doctor and other aid. The doctor was of the opinion he had been dead for about an hour.
He had left the large door open, but a check indicated that the wind had blown the door shut and the fact that he had a weak heart combined with the gas from the engine caused his death.
Main was forced to curtail much of his farming about three years ago because of heart trouble, but was able to do considerable work most of the time. He was a good friend to all who knew him and in the words of a neighbor of a lifetime: "Nothing too good can be said of him, he was kind, clever and always willing to lend a hand, there seemed to be nothing but good in him.
" Vogel Delbert Main was born on November 2, 1879, and passed away February 27, 1947, at his home north of Colfax, at the age of 67 years, 3 months and 25 days. As a boy he moved with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rezin Main, from his birthplace near Monroe, Ia., to his present neighborhood. Fifty- two years ago, the family moved to the farm where he resided at the time of his death.
On September 1, 1909, he was united in marriage to Susie Hunter, who survives him. He is also survived by one sister, Gertrude Cross of Long Beach, California; one brother, Andrew J. Main of Altoona, Iowa, also sixteen nieces and nephews.
His parents and one sister, Mrs. Kitty Haines, preceded him in death.
Vode's sudden passing has been a great shock to his many friends and neighbors, who will long remember his ever-willing helpfulness. He was always generous in thought and act. His place in his community will remain unfilled for those who knew him best.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon from the Methodist church with the pastor, Rev. Paul K. Potter officiating.
Music was furnished by Mrs. Lou Neal, Mrs. Howard Southern, Eldon Geisler and Otha Hulse with Mrs. L. L. Pickett, pianist.
Pall bearers were Frank Evans, Royal Mindham, Sam Sage, Jr., Harry Morgan, Joe Kvasny and Alex Lewis.
