Fallen Asleep

At her late home in this city Sunday at 4:20 p. m., Mrs. Susan Gray fell asleep to awaken in that fairer home where sickness and sadness of parting never comes. Mrs. Gray’s maiden name was Susan Williams. She was born in Meadville, Pa., June 26, 1818, and while quite young moved with her relatives to Wisconsin. On May 16, 1852, in Monroe, Wisconsin, she was married to Mr. Thomas Gray, who with one son, Geo. Gray of this place, and one daughter, Mrs. Hattie Daniels, now mourn the loss of this devoted wife and loving mother. Mr. and Mrs. Gray came to this city in 1883. Mrs. Gray had gradually failed in health during the winter and with the return of spring she did get better as had been fondly hoped, but gently faded away from us. She was a member of the Christian Church and her life a benediction to all who knew her. As the Endeavourers gathered in the consecration service Sunday afternoon, the bell tolled the death knell of this aged sister, and the organ pealed forth as if in sympathy with the bereaved ones “Nearer My God To Thee.” At the close of this beautiful hymn the Lord’s Prayer was repeated by the society and the hallowed hour spent in consecration. The funeral was held Monday at 3 p. m., in the church of which she was a member, Rev. Gray speaking words of comfort and consolation from words found in I Cor. 15:5-6. At the close of the service the remains were laid to rest in our beautiful Waveland Cemetery. ~ The Newton (IA) Record Thursday, May 5, 1898
