Bertha M. McConeghey, 85, of Newton died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at Park Centre in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Newton with Sue Woods, licensed minister of Disciples of Christ, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to First Christian Church or to Willowbrook Adult Day Care and may be left at the funeral home or at the church the day of the service.

The daughter of Frank Lester and Florence Verna (Starrett) Hummel, she was born Dec. 29, 1918, in Newton. She graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1939. On May 8, 1940, she married Robert W. McConeghey in Newton. She was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church. She enjoyed working with flowers, gardening, baking, sewing, fishing and camping.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Paris Becket of Newton; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Karen McConeghey of Urbandale; three granddaughters; three step-granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Forrest Hummel; and a sister, Doris (Hummel) Kier.
