WENNIHAN, MAPES, GLASFORD, WHITSON

NORWALK -- Dennis S. Wennihan, 75, and Ruth M. Wennihan, 72, both of Norwalk and formerly of Newton, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2004, at their home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Burnham Rand of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Des Moines officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the American Heart Association or to the American Diabetes Association and may be left at the funeral home.

Dennis, the son of Charles C. and Dortha S. (Mapes) Wennihan, was born July 3, 1929, in Fort Morgan, Colo. He graduated from Tarkio High School in Tarkio, Mo., and attended Tarkio College. He worked in maintenance for the Maytag Company for more than 25 years and retired in December 1990. He also retired as a school bus driver for Newton Community School District.

Ruth, the daughter of Marion M. and Eva M. (Glasford) Whitson, was born Jan. 19, 1932, in Albia. She graduated from Albia High School and attended Tarkio College in Tarkio, Mo. She was a homemaker and a para-pro in the Newton Community School District.

On Aug. 10, 1952, they married in Albia. They were members of Friends Supper Club and attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Des Moines. They lived in Newton from 1960 to 1995 and then moved to Norwalk.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, John Charles and Rebecca Wennihan and Blaine Wennihan, all of Newton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Deb and Jack Jecklin of Davenport, Kathy Wennihan of Des Moines and Sheryl and Dennis Schwartz of Colfax; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; her mother and step-father, Eva and Dean Bozell of Chariton; her two brothers and sister-in-law, Don Whitson of Marshalltown and Jim and Betty Whitson of Newton; his brother and sister-in-law, Winford and Doris Wennihan of Tarkio, Mo.; and his sister and brother-in-law, Betty Jo and Roland Nelson of Littleton, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, John Whitson. He was preceded in death by his parents. ~ Newton Daily News, Monday, October 25, 2004
