SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Jerry "JR" Whalen, 66, of San Antonio, Texas, formerly of Newton, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, in San Antonio.

Funeral mass was held Nov. 13 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with the Rev. Daniel Cisneros officiating. Burial followed at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.

The son of William and Leona J. Whalen, he was born Sept. 17, 1938, in Schaller. His family moved to Newton in 1946. He attended Newton schools and graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas. He owned and operated Business Form Sources. He was a NASCAR fan.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joan; five children, Mark and wife Doris Whalen of Clinton, Jeanette, Tom and Pat Whalen, all of Round Rock, Texas, and Phillip Whalen of Arlington, Va.; five grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Ellis of Newton; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Daryle and Charlotte Whalen of Newton, Michael C. Whalen of Houston, Texas, and Don and Frankie Whalen of Bastrap, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
