GRINNELL -- Melvin R. Van Der Kamp, 78, of Grinnell died of heart failure Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at his home.

Funeral services were held today at 10:30 a.m. at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Bob Zirkelbach, pastor of the Grace Community Church in Grinnell, officiating. Burial will be at Bethel Cemetery in rural Jasper County.

The family would prefer memorial contributions be directed toward the Grace Community Church or Kellogg Historical Museum.

The son of Silas and Jennie (Brand) Van Der Kamp, he was born April 18, 1926, on the family farm near Sully. He was a 1944 graduate of Sully High School. He was married to Margaret Ashby on Feb. 17, 1948, at her parent's home in rural Grinnell. The couple farmed near Kellogg and later southeast of Newton for many years. He also worked as an electrician and plumber. He moved to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 2000. He was a member of the Grace Community Church.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Norman Van Der Kamp of Kansas City, Mo., and Bruce Van Der Kamp of Centennial, Colo.; one daughter, Mary Osborne of Boone; one brother, Ralph Van Der Kamp of Sully; two grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Florence Evans; and one brother, Donald Van Der Kamp.
