Elma B. Rodgers, 74, of Newton died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain of Skiff Medical Center in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Palo Alto Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to Jasper County Animal Rescue League and Humane Society, to Hospice of Jasper County or to the American Heart Association and may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Dan and Aura (Fleming) Jenkins, she was born March 5, 1930, in Newton. She married Maurice Rodgers in 1970 in Newton. She had been a domestic worker in several Newton homes early in her adult life. She also worked at Stockton's in the Newton Mall for many years and at The Salvation Army. She enjoyed gardening and loved and cared for many animals. She was a lifelong resident of Newton.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, David R. and Marsha Harrington of Ooltewah, Tenn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diana L. and James Hillygus of Conrad and Sandra J. and Gary Durr of Grinnell; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Bill Jenkins and Dean Jenkins, both of Newton, and Jim and Ann Jenkins of Lincoln, Neb.; a sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Robert Wolfe of Monroe; a sister-in-law, Judy Jenkins of Monroe; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Stan Hockey and his son, Mike Hockey.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, James G. Rodgers; a daughter, Judy Pierce; a brother, Daniel Jenkins; and a sister, Merle Reedholm.
