Edmund Ayer "Bud" McCardell Jr., 71, of Newton died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at his home in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith of Skiff Medical Center in Newton officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

The son of Edmund "Ed" McCardell Sr. and Bernetta Kunau, he was born May 23, 1933, in Newton. He was a graduate of Newton Senior High School in 1951. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1955 with a bachelor of arts degree in geography. He was employed as an assistant to the president at Winpower in Newton and later owned and operated Honeycorr. He retired in 2004 after 25 years as president. He enjoyed playing golf and the outdoors. He achieved 15 holes-in-one over the years and was Iowa State Amateur runner-up several times and won in 1970. He was the captain of the University of Iowa golf team and a lifetime member of Iowa Golf Association. He served on the Herman Sani Golf Scholarship committee for many years. He was a past member of the Jasper County Animal Rescue League and Humane Society board of directors and past member of The Salvation Army board of directors.

Survivors include a son, Mark McCardell of Santa Fe, N.M.; a sister and brother-in-law, Jeanne and Roger Hershey of Newton; his step-mother, Marjorie G. McCardell of Newton; an aunt, cousins and nephew, several nieces and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents
