Leslie G. Hamilton Jr., 83, of Newton died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Newton Union Cemetery with the Rev. Tiare Mathison-Bowie of the First Presbyterian Church in Newton officiating. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will be available from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the American Heart Association and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Leslie Glenn Hamilton Sr. and Estella Mae Dryer, he was born Jan. 8, 1921, in Chariton. He graduated from Chariton High School and on Jan. 28, 1945, he married Lila L. Crabb in Chariton. He served in the 9th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. During his military service, he received the Croix de guerre medal, which was awarded to individuals who distinguished themselves by acts of heroism involving combat with the enemy forces. He also received three Purple Heart medals.

Mr. Hamilton owned and operated Hamilton Glass for 30 years. He was an avid Newton Cardinal football fan, enjoyed reading, flying and camping. He was a resident of Newton since 1946.

Survivors include a son, Larry G. Hamilton of Newton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Leslie L. and Lance Renaud of Marshalltown and Linda K. and Mike Van Baale of Newton; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his step-mother, Alice Hamilton of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Charles L. "Eddie" Hamilton; and a sister, Betty Jane Hicks.
