MERCED, Calif. -- Lawrence McDaniel, 81, of Merced, Calif., formerly of Newton, died Aug. 20, 2004, in Merced, Calif.

The body was cremated.

The son of Claude and Lena McDaniel, he was born May 25, 1923, in Monroe. He attended school in Newton and worked for the postal service. He was married to Carol Beck, formerly of Grinnell.

Survivors include two sons, Leslie McDaniel of Bellevue, Wash., and William McDaniel of Los Banos, Calif.; a daughter, Linda Brickman of Merced, Calif.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Mardell Reed of Colfax.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas: one brother, Marion McDaniel and a sister, Claudena Trease.
