Death from Membranous Croup

Erle Eugene, only child of Mr. and Mrs. Frank G. Boat, died in this city, of membranous croup, about one o’clock last Tuesday. The little one was two years old on the 14th of January. The circumstances connected with its death are peculiarly sad. Mr. and Mrs. Boat have been living with Mrs. B’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Darr, in the Col. Meyer property in Farmer St. Last Monday the families were moving to Baxter, and Mr. Boat took a load of their household goods over, intending to return and take the remainder and the family on Tuesday. His little boy was out on the sidewalk and bade his papa goodbye. In the evening he was taken with membranous croup. And in spite of all the efforts to relive him, he continued to grow worse, until about one o’clock Tuesday afternoon when death ended his sufferings. The father returned home soon afterward, and was overwhelmed with sorrow on learning that the pet and joy of their home had gone out forever.

Brief funeral services were held at the home at 9:30 Wednesday morning, conducted by Rev. C. V. Cowan. On account of the nature of the disease, the residence was quarantined, and none but the minister and relatives permitted to attend. The remains were taken to Baxter for interment. ~ The Newton Record Friday, March 12, 1897
