Curtis Benskin, Former Resident, Dies at Wesley

Curtis W. Benskin, 63, former resident of Jasper county, died yesterday morning at his home in Wesley after a lingering illness. He underwent surgery for cancer last summer and was confined to his bed for several weeks previous to his death.

Born in Galesburg, March 17, 1888, Mr. Benskin was the son of Joseph and Hattie Trimble Benskin. He was educated in Jasper and Marshall county rural schools.

Mr. Benskin lived most of his life in Jasper and Marshall counties. During his youth and for 20 years after his marriage to Lillie Hutchinson, he lived on his father's farm near Laurel.

After his retirement from farming in 1940, Mr. Benskin lived in Wesley where he was a law-enforcement officer and later a salesman.

Mr. Benskin was precede in death by his mother, who died when he was three, and his father.

His survivors include his wife; his stepmother, Mrs. Sophie Mathers, Laurel; two children, Mrs. Donald Kinnaird, Grinnell, and Vearl, Wesley; two half brothers, Bert and Harley of Laurel; a half sister, Mrs. Merle Paul of Laurel, and several grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at nine o'clock Thursday morning in the Wesley Methodist church were Mr. Benskin was a member. There will be graveside rites at three o'clock in the afternoon at the Sugar Grove cemetery near Metz. The Toland Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements. ~ Newton Daily News May 8, 1951.
