Samuel Bolen Longtime Resident Died Wednesday
Samuel Bolen, 74, died at his farm home southeast of Colfax, early Wednesday morning, Oct. 12th at 1:30 a.m. He had been in failing health for the past 9 years.
He was born Feb. 14, 1886 at St. Rok Croatia, Yugoslavia, the son of Steve and Martha Bolen. He immigrated to America in 1905 and worked in the Albia coal mines prior to moving to Seevers, Ia. He was united in marriage to Matilda Krpan on April 23, 1908 at St. Mary’s church in Albia, Iowa. They settled at Seevers until 1915 when they purchased a farm northeast of Colfax where he also owned and operated a coal mine for several years. In 1931 he purchased the farm south of Colfax where he continued to reside until his death.
Mr. Bolen made his home in the vicinity of Colfax for 52 years. He was always interested in his work and enjoyed his family. He was a kind and loving father and thoughtful neighbor and friend and will be greatly missed by all.
He was a life time member of the Immaculate Conception church and a member of the Croatian Fraternal Lodge of Des Moines for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by one son, Steve.
Surviving him are his wife and 5 children including John at home, Joe of Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. Charles (Anna) Herbold of Des Moines; Mrs. Everett (Mary) Purcell of El Monte, Calif. and Mrs. Harry (Kathryn) Morgan of Farrar, Iowa. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and a great granddaughter.
Rosary will be recited Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Bolen home. Requiem High Mass will be sung by the choir of the Salvatorian Novitiate at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception church. Rev. Karl Holtkamp will officiate.
Pallbearers will be John Stremfel, John Tomlonovic, Vince Tomlonovic, Larry Bolen, Donald Bolen and Harry Morgan.
Honorary pall bearers will be H. E. Bell, Charles Holdefer, Clarence Main, Emory Tomlon, Rick Susic and Gus DeCamp.
Flower Committee – Mrs. Earl Bale and Mrs. Leonard Lunders.
Interment will be at the Colfax Cemetery.
