James Gardner Dies Suddenly at His Home Here Last Night
James Gardner, 61, prominent Newton farmer, died suddenly about 8:30 o’clock last night at his farm home southwest of Newton of a heart attack. He was a lifetime resident of Jasper county.
Mr. Gardner had been to see a physician in Newton and returned to the farm about five o’clock yesterday afternoon. He did a little work around the place and then was suddenly stricken. He was alone at the time and was found shortly afterward by members of his family.
With the exception of nine years, Mr. Gardner had lived all his life at the family home. He was born there Oct. 21, 1887 and received his education in the county schools.
He married Leona Munger Dec. 24, 1917 in Newton. They farmed at the home place before moving to another section of Jasper county for eight years. In 1928 they moved back to the home farm and have farmed there since.
Mr. Gardner was the son of Archibald and Racheal Gardner. He was a member of the First Methodist church in Newton and the Palo Alto Grange.
Surviving him are his wife, Leona; two sons, James Jr. of Monroe and Dale at home; two daughters, Mrs. William J. (Dorothy) Richards of Kellogg and Mrs. Merle (Helen) Kreager of Newton; five grandchildren, Patty and Barbara Gardner, Michael Kreager and Billy and David Richards, one brother, John Gardner of Grinnell, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services have not been announced pending the return of his daughter, Helen, and her husband who are vacationing in the Ozarks. A police call to notify the Kreagers of Mr. Gardner’s death was sent out last night.
