Mrs. Laura Blanche Haines, 78, resident of Newton for the past 29 years, died at 4:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at Skiff Memorial hospital after suffering a sudden heart attack. Mrs. Haines had been in poor health for some time.
She attended a Sunday school class party at the First Methodist church yesterday afternoon. She became ill while at the party and was taken to the hospital, where she died less than three hours later.
Funeral services have not been set pending arrival of a son from California. Her body was taken to the Toland Funeral Home.
Mrs. Haines was the daughter of Aschel and Nancy Shafer. She was born Oct. 23, 1870, near Galesburg. She was married to Edwin S. Haines in a ceremony March 15, 1893 in Oskaloosa. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary March 15, 1943, two months before Mr. Haines preceded his wife in death on May 4, 1943. Following their marriage in 1893, Mr. and Mrs. Haines made their home on a farm five miles north of new Sharon until 1904, with the exception of one year when they moved to Lynnville where Mr. Haines operated a livery stable. Leaving the farm in 1904, they moved to Sully and lived there until 1920 while Mr. Haines worked 13 and one-half years as a rural mail carrier.
They moved to Newton in 1920 and Mr. Haines operated an acreage until his death. Mrs. Haines was a member of the Methodist church, the Navy Mothers club and the American Legion auxiliary.
She is survived by three sons, Harry E. Haines of California, Tracy W. Haines of New York and Walter R. Haines of Newton, and one brother, Harry Shafer of Des Moines. One daughter, Mrs. Ralph Frazier, preceded her mother in death June 26, 1916.
