Ed Slings, the son of Jella and Jacoba (Terlouw) Slings, was born October 25, 1923 in Marion County, Iowa. On September 26, 1945, Ed was united in marriage with Gertrude B. Van Zee at the Christian Reformed Church in Newton.

Ed loved working the land. He farmed until 1971, when he went to work for the City of Newton as a mechanic at Westwood Golf Course. He retired in 1990. In his spare time, Ed enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. Ed was a longtime member of the Newton Christian Reformed Church.

Ed died on Sunday, August 26, 2018 at Nelson Manor in Newton. He was 94 years old. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 71 years, Gertrude on September 25, 2016; his two brothers and one sister.

Those left to honor Ed’s memory include his daughters, Sherry (Chuck) Stewart and Nancy (Jack) Swank; his sons, Denny (Georgia) Slings and Gary (Susan) Slings; his nine grandchildren; his twenty-eight great grandchildren; his four great-great grandchildren; his sister and brother-in-law, Betty (Dean) Ward; his brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Pearl Van Zee, Ed (Andi) Van Zee, Mary Lou Kredit, and Irene Hilleman.

Funeral services for Ed will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 29th at the Christian Reformed Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5:00 until 7:00 pm Tuesday at the Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home. Memorials may be designated in Ed’s name to the Christian Reformed Church and may be left at the church or at Pence ~ Reese Funeral Home. ~ The Pence Reese Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 26 Aug 2018.
