Fred Coles Dies In Snowmobile Accident Here Early Saturday
Horace Fred Coles, 32, of Colfax, was killed early Saturday morning, November 27, in a snowmobile accident near Colfax.
Deputy Sheriff Alan Wheeler, called to the scene near the Interfaith Center at 1:15 a.m. said Coles died of an apparent broken neck when his vehicle struck a fence and threw him to the ground. His helmet was found near the body, Wheeler said.
Riding on another snowmobile with Coles were Donald E. Earles of Colfax, driver, and john Tom Leydens of Colfax, who notified authorities.
Funeral services were held Monday, November 29, at the Walters-Coburn Funeral home in Colfax.
The Rev. Robert Snyder, pastor of the Baptist Church in Colfax, conducted services. Burial was in Palmyra, Virginia.
Surviving is his mother, Margaret Coles of Colfax. He was preceded in death by his father.
Mr. Coles, a Boy Scout leader, was a member of the Colfax Baptist Church, American legion, Colfax Junior Chamber of Commerce and CB Club.
He had been employed at the Van Dusseldorp Sand and Gravel Co.
The son of Horace and Margaret Gunnell Coles, he was born June 21, 1944, at Colfax.
