====================================
On Monday afternoon the funeral for D. W. Church was held at the chapel in the cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. J. W. Potter, of the Methodist Church. Hymns were sung by a quartette: Mesdames George Allen, Nona Knepper, and Messrs George Allen and Fred Hough. The bearers were member of the Grand Army of the Republic as follows: Robert Burns, J. D. Edge, Harry Phillips, Thomas Kennedy, Henry Efnor and Captain Cozad.

Mr. Church was born June 3, 1811 at Covington, New York. He was the oldest of fourteen children. Two brothers and two sisters survive him.

When he was twelve years of age he came to Michigan and in that state was married to his first wife.

After her death, Mr. Church was united in marriage to Mrs. Eliza Parker. To them were born a son and daughter. The son, Robert Church, died about twelve years ago, but the daughter, Mrs. Johanna Wright, of Chicago, with the wife survives him.

Mr. Church was a Civil War veteran, a member of Co I, 10th Iowa Infantry. The funeral was attended by many of the G. A. Rs.

Thus one of the earliest settlers of Newton passed away and without a doubt the oldest citizen of our city and quite probably of the county. He was naturally a strong, vigorous man and until the last year had been a familiar character on our streets. His death come after several months’ illness of troubles which naturally come to one of his age, which followed a fall at which time one of his legs was broken.

His daughter, Mrs. Wright, came a week ago and helped the mother in caring for him during the last days of his sickness. On account of illness his brothers and sisters, who are very old, could not be at his bedside during his last illness or attend the funeral. !~ The Newton Daily News, Wednesday, April 3, 1907, Page 1, Column 3
