Prominent Man Dies in Mingo
George Osborn Passes Away at Home Shared With Grandson Yesterday – Funeral Tomorrow.
MINGO, Iowa. October 23 – George Osborn, pioneer resident of Mingo, died at his home in which he shared with his grandson Orville Osborn, Monday morning at 6 o’clock from complications incident to his advanced age, which was 78 years.
Mr. Osborn, who was one of the successful farmers of the community has lived here for over a half a century in Jasper county and has been contributed generously in the upward trend of the county’s progress. He was a man who enjoyed the friendship of many and
was greatly loved by his intimate friends and relatives.
George Osborn was born in 1845 in Guernsey county, Ohio, and came to Jasper county in 1869. He was married in Harriett Hill in Huntington county, Indiana, 57 years ago. His devoted wife preceded him in death 16 years ago. Mr. Osborn was a veteran of the Civil war serving as a private in Company G. One Hundred and forty-Seventh regiment for about two years. All of his life he was a faithful member of the Evangelical church. Besides he was interested in all the movements which tended for a better Mingo and jasper county.
Surviving him are his sons, U. S. Osborn, Monroe and Melvin Osborn, all three of Mingo, Martin L. Osborn of Wisconsin and a daughter, Mrs. Hattie Stier, of Mingo.
Funeral services will be held at the church in Mingo Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock with Rev. Mr. Allen officiating.
Burial will be made in Greencastle cemetery.

George C. Osborn was born September 15, 1845 in Gurnsey County, Ohio; died October 22, 1923 at his home in Mingo, Iowa, aged 78 years, 1 month and 7 days. He was united in marriage with Harriett Dell; to this union were born 6 children: Melvin, James, Ulysses, Martin and Hattie. His wife preceded him in death in 1908.
He came to Iowa in 1869 and has lived in Jasper county since that time.
He was converted in early life and united with the Evangelical Church at Greencastle, and later united with the M.E. Church in Mingo, under the Pastorate of Rev. Grigsby.
He was a veteran of the Civil War and enlisted August 22, 1862 in Co. “G” 174th Ohio Regiment, and served his country until the close of the war.
He leaves to mourn his loss besides his children mentioned, 3 sisters and two brothers, Rachel Graham of Alabama, Lucinda Cummings of Mingo, Ellen Shissler of Colfax, Adolphus of Baxter; and William of Minnesota, also 28 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church at Mingo Wednesday, October 24th at 2:00 p.m. conducted by the pastor, Rev. w. L. Allen. Burial was at Greencastle.
