George W. McCall, an old Civil War veteran, died at his home in Runnels on the 21st of December, aged sixty-five years, nine months and three days. There are a number of his old comrades living in Jasper County where he enlisted as a soldier away back in the dark days of ’62, who will shed tears of sorrow when they read the news of his death. Wash served in Company C, 22nd Iowa Infantry and was a comrade of the local editor of the RECORD for three years. He was one of the best and bravest of soldiers, always merry and light-hearted, no matter what were his surroundings, and the boys all loved him. He had been a widower for sixteen years, and during that time had lived among his children, six of whom survive him. His disease was lung and heart trouble, from which he had been confined to his room for over three months. The old veteran has only passed over the river to join the great majority of his comrades who fought to save their country in the dark days of its peril. We know that death found him all ready for the great inspection and roll call when the “Reveille” shall be sounded on the morning of the resurrection.
