Hold Rites For Robert Conwell in Baxter Church
Baxter, Oct. 6 – Special to the Daily News – Funeral services for Robert C. Conwell
Robert C. Conwell, 86, former Baxter resident who died in Winterset Sunday, were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Baxter Congregational church by Rev. B. W. Northrup. Interment was in Restland cemetery.
Mr. Conwell died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Della Lavalleur, in Winterset, following an illness of several months. He had made his home with his children for the last few years, spending part of the time in Baxter.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Mrs. Lavalleur of Winterset and Mrs. Cora Schroyer of Hertel, Wis., two sons, Orville of Baxter and Floyd of Pocatello, Idaho; two brothers, Carlos and Clark Conwell of Baxter, and two sisters, Mrs. J. S. Booth of Marshalltown and Mrs. Sylvester Guthrie of Pierpont, S.D. Eight grandchildren also survive.

Baxter, Oct. 13 – Special to the Daily News – Robert C. Conwell died Sunday, Oct. 1, 1933, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Della Lavalleur in Winterset.
Funeral services were held from the Baxter Congregational church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock with Rev. B. W. Northup in charge. Burial was in Restland cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry Carstens, Otto Schumann, Fred Vansice, Lon Tipton, Joe Cross, Frank Sego.
Robert C. Conwell was born in Tuscarawas county, Ohio, Jan. 25, 1847. At the age of seven years, he came in a covered wagon, with his parents to Davenport, where they spent the winter.
The following summer the family continued their journey westward to Newton, which was then but a small village. Later they moved to the Rushville neighborhood a few miles northeast of Newton where they resided for nine years. They then moved to a farm near Baxter, now known as the Carlos Conwell farm. It was the deceased’s priviledge to see the first train that ever came into Newton.
On November 17, 1871, he was united in marriage with Miss Ellen Neff and with his bride established their home in a log cabin south of his parent’s home. The couple continued to reside in this farm until 1913 when they moved to Lorimor, where three years later Mrs. Conwell passed away.
In 1918 he was married to Sarah Rhone who passed away in 1926. For the past several years, Mr. Conwell made his home alternately with his son Orville at Baxter, and his daughter, Mrs. Lavalleur at Winterset.
At his death he had attained the age of 86 years, 8 months and 6 days. He is survived by five children by his first marriage. Surviving are Mrs. Cora Schroyer of Hertel, Wisc.; Mrs. Della Lavalleur of Winterset, Orville Conwell, Baxter and Floyd Conwell of Pocatello, Idaho. Two brothers, Carlos and Clark, both of Baxter also survive with two sisters, Mrs. J. S. Booth of Marshalltown and Mrs. Sylvester Gurites of Pierpont, S.D.
