Mrs. Luengen Passes Away
Died at Her Home in Colfax, Friday, December 29
Mrs. Emma Brewer Luengen, widow of the late P. W. Luengen died Friday. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Sunday at 3:30 and her only son, P. W., left on the evening train for Saquache, Colorado, where interment will be made by the side of her husband. The funeral services here were conducted by Rev. E. G. Williams. The Eastern Star and Womans Club attended in a body.
Emma Brewer was born on the 4th of September 1854, in Wyoming county, Pennsylvania, and spent her childhood in Webster county, Iowa, and received most of her education at Webster City. After she completed her education she taught school until her marriage to Samuel Sutter, which occurred in 1879. After the termination of this wedded life, Mr. Sutter dying in 1889, Mrs. Luengen acted as principal of the school at Saquache, Colorado, and also engaged with success in business.
She was married to P. W. Luengen in 1890; and to this union two children were born, one dying in infancy, and the other a son, Perry Luengen, remaining to mourn both parents. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Luengen removed from Saquache, Col., and came to Colfax, Iowa. Here they operated the Centropolis Hotel and Sanitarium until 1911; when they returned to Colorado. Mr. Luengen died suddenly in January of 1913; Mrs. Luengen has resided here since that sad event.
In the years that Mrs. Luengen lived in Colfax she made a host of friends who will greatly miss her. Through her connection with the Centropolis Hotel her circle of acquaintanceship became very large and her interest in all public and civic affairs still further expanded the number of those who knew her. For five years she has been president of the local Womans Club; and she was also a member of the Eastern Star, White Shrine and the D.A.R. To these activities she added a very faithful and affectionate interest in church work, being one of the very dependable members of the Colfax Presbyterian church.
Mrs. Luengen’s place in the affairs of this city was such that she will be genuinely missed. There are left to mourn her loss, a son, Perry Luengen, three sisters, Mrs. J. E. Clark, of Webster City; Mrs. G. H. Williams of F. Dodge; Mrs. I. T. Branigan, of Dewar Lake, Canada, and one brother, A. Brewer, of Saqusche, Colorado. In addition there are many, many friends whose lives are emptier because she is gone.
