Matt Hunter Found Dying
Black Car Loader at Mine No. 8 Wednesday afternoon at Four O’Clock
Jury Says Heart Failure Is Cause
Unconscious When Found – Died in Few Seconds – Not a Drinking Man
About four o’clock Wednesday the men who came up from Mine No. 8 found car loader Matt Hunter lying on the run-board beside the car unconscious and he died after a few gasping breaths.
He was about forty years old and single, living with his mother, Mrs. Mary Hunter, in Colfax. Dr. Stewart was called who, with several other men testifying before the coroner’s jury, said he died from heart failure. The remains were brought to the Cutter undertaking parlor and Coroner Byers from Newton came and impanelled a jury for an inquest.
The jury was composed of B. L. Logsdon, J. R. Sharp and Scott Johnston. The witnesses examined were Leo Carroll, John Jeffreys, Dan Davis, John Pearson, J. A. Henry, and Dr. F. W. Stewart.
The verdict was, “Came to his death by heart failure, no evidence of violence or assault, coal company is no way to blame.”
