The people of Ira and vicinity were at the depot Friday evening to meet the train that brought the body of their neighbor and friend, John Crawford, who had passed away Friday noon at the hospital in Des Moines after an operation for cancer of the stomach. Mr. Crawford and family lived near Ira and was one of Jasper county’s best men.
John H. Crawford, son of James B. and Eliza Crawford, was born on the old Crawford farm November 12, 1867, and passed away at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines at 12:30 Friday, September 28, 1917. He was married to Clara Crawford in 1893. She died April 1, 1904, leaving three daughters, Florence, Jennie and Hazel. Hazel died August 27, 1907.
On January 23, 1907, Mr. Crawford was married to Lydia M. Cross. Two sons were born to them, the older dying in infancy, and John Henry, with the mother, the two daughters and baby granddaughter still survive. He is also survived by three sisters and one brother. Mrs. Hannah Tramel and Mrs. Nellie Planalp of Ira, Mrs. Mary Campbell of Manning, Iowa, and Henry Crawford of Lake City, Iowa
His last illness began about two months ago but was of such a nature that he was not confined to his home. Two weeks ago it became necessary to consult a specialist and he was advised that his only hope of life was to submit to a surgical operation at once. All that medical skill and loving care could do was done, but to no avail. In the community where practically all his life had been spent, no one would be more greatly missed. Never too busy to lend a helping hand to a friend or neighbor; of a happy cheerful disposition, his nearest friends hardly knew he was so ill until he had passed from among them. From the first he seemed to realize that it was his final illness and talked with his loved ones of his departure.
While he would have liked to remain with them longer, he expressed his readiness and willingness to go if it was the Lord’s will.
