Hillis, Joseph Harvey – 1859-1918

Joseph Harvey Hillis, son of Wm. and Sarah Hillis, was born in Guernsey county, Ohio, November 15th, 1859 and died at Colfax, Iowa, January 6, 1918, at the age of 58 years, 1 month and 21 days.
At the age of twenty-one he came with his parents and located on a farm near Churdan, Iowa, a few years later moving to Churdan and engaging in the mercantile business, which line he followed until his health failed him.
On July 20, 1886 he married Elizabeth May Garrett. To this union were born four children, Blyde Eugene of Colfax, Mrs. Bertha Peterson of Boone, Florence Elzina and Mrs. Marjory Everett of Colfax. All were with him at the end, except Florence Elzina, who died at the age of two years.
He also leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, one brother, John Wesley Hillis of Dash Point, Washington, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Alice Wherry of Nevada, Iowa, and Mrs. Tillie Downie of Stockton, California. The brother and sister from California were unable to be present.
Interment was made in Churdan, Iowa, January 8th.
Mr. Hillis was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church for a great many years. The pastor, Rev. G. F. Cannom, conducted funeral services Monday evening at 7:30, at the Hillis home on Howard Street.
