Death of Mrs. Baldwin
Sarah Jane Baldwin died at the Victoria Sanitorium Monday evening, December 31, after a serious illness which required a surgical operation, some three weeks ago. All that skill and loving hands and hearts could do was without avail.
This dear mother was born in Jasper county, Illinois, August 21, 1845, being 72 years, 4 months and 10 days old. With her widowed mother and family she came to Jasper county, Iowa where she has lived and toiled for almost sixty years. Mrs. Baldwin was the second child of a family of three girls and three boys, of which a sister and brother survive. On September 8th, 1863, she was united in marriage to Willis Rowe, who fell mortally wounded on the battlefield before Atlanta, July 22, 1864. She married Mertlow Baldwin October 5, 1865. To this union were born two children, Mary E. Jennings of Colfax and Eugene H. Baldwin of Mingo, who so tenderly ministered to their mother during the trying ordeal of her great suffering. The other descendants are five grandchildren and a great-grandson. Mrs. Baldwin was an earnest and devoted member of the Christian church at Newton and when her health would permit was a regular attendant at all the church services. She also took a deep interest and was a loyal member of the Woman’s Relief Corps.
A short service was held at the home of William E. Jennings, conducted by the local pastor, C. S. Wycoff, assisted by the deceased woman’s pastor, R. B. Helser of Newton, at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, after which the remains were conveyed to her home church at Newton where full funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Helser. The interment was beside the grave of her husband in the Newton cemetery.
