Mrs. E. J. H. Beard Dies Here Today
Death follows Sudden Heart Attack Here Early This Morning
Mrs. E. J. H. Beard, well-known resident of this city for a number of years, died suddenly at her home here at 7 o’clock this morning as the result of a heart attack. ___ (paper torn) a number of years but her condition had not been serious at any time during the past several weeks. She was up at her home preceding her death this morning.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 o’clock from the Morgan Funeral Home.
Mrs. Beard was 83 years of age and was born on Nov. 14, 1848 in the state of Vermont. After receiving her education she was engaged as a teacher and it was while she was teaching in Hamburg, Ia., that she met and married Professor E. J. H. Beard who was also a teacher in the Hamburg schools. Following their marriage they lived at that place for 14 years and at the end of that time moved to Missouri for a period of eight years. They came to Newton in 1892 and she has since made her home in this city. Mr. Beard held the position of superintendent of the Newton schools for a number of years. He preceded her in death.
She is survived by three daughters, Vesta Beard, who is an instructor in the local high school, Gertrude Beard who has a music studio here and Mrs. J. M. Vernon of Des Moines. She is also survived by two grandsons, one great grandson, two nieces and two nephews. Her only son died during the Spanish American War, and she was also preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Dr. and Mrs. Vernon of Des Moines arrived in Newton later this morning.

Services Held For Mrs. E. J. H. Beard
Funeral services for Mrs. E. J. H. Beard were held from the Morgan Funeral home at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon with Rev. J. Irvine Walker, pastor of the Congregational church, officiating. Burial was in Newton Union cemetery.
Mrs. Lettie Earley Van Hoosen sang a vocal selection, “Harbor Bar,” accompanied at the piano by Miss Ruth Campbell, as the musical portion of the service.
Pallbearers were W. J. Meredith, L. W. France, Ed Finch, John Clarkson, B. C. Berg and Robert McLaughlin.
